Gilbert breaks drought

Finally, Phillipe Gilbert has taken his maiden victory in the Rainbow Jersey!

Cycling fans, not just Gilbert fans have been celebrating all day. With only a month to go until the World Champs in Florence time was running out for the BMC rider to take the Rainbow stripes over the line in front of the pack.

I have to say that for me, Gilbert’s victory has come at a very timely moment. I can only begin to imagine the self doubt that must have been pervading his mind and confidence.

But Gilbert fought and fought and eventually it all fell into place, even if that meant beating one of my favourite riders, the Norwegian, Edvald Boassen Hagen.

I think anytime I’m having a moment of self doubt I’ll think of Gilbert and his horror year and his victory at the Vuelta.

Chapeau Philippe Gilbert!
